Zac Brown Band
The Journey of a Chart-Topping Country Group
The Zac Brown Band exploded onto the country music scene in the late 2000s and has since become one of the genre’s most popular and successful acts. Formed in Atlanta in 2002 by lead vocalist Zac Brown, the band built a dedicated regional following through constant touring before breaking out nationally in 2008.
Zac Brown originally began performing solo acoustic shows in the Atlanta area in the early 2000s. He formed the initial incarnation of the Zac Brown Band in 2002, comprising himself on guitar and lead vocals, bassist John Driskell Hopkins, drummer Chris Fryar, guitarist/organist Coy Bowles, and fiddler Jimmy De Martini. The band independently released their first album “Home Grown” in 2004 and began heavily touring clubs and festivals across the Southeast. Their energetic live shows, tight musicianship and eclectic blend of country, bluegrass, and jam band styles quickly earned them a passionate regional fanbase.
Zac Brown Band’s reputation as a must-see live act led to a record deal with Atlantic Records and Bigger Picture Group, releasing their major-label debut “The Foundation” in 2008. Powered by hits like “Chicken Fried” and “Toes”, the album reached #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. Follow-up “You Get What You Give” (2010) built on that success with #1 country and pop hits “Free” and “As She’s Walking Away”, cementing the group’s place as a major commercial force in country music. Subsequent albums Experiment (2014), Jekyll + Hyde (2015), and Welcome Home (2017) all topped the country charts while also incorporating elements of pop, rock, and EDM.
Zac Brown Band is known for its dynamic and eclectic sound, fusing country, bluegrass, reggae, and other styles into a unique blend. Brown cites genre-spanning acts like The Eagles, James Taylor, and Jimmy Buffett as major influences on the band’s artistic approach. Their songs often showcase rich vocal harmonies and skilled instrumental interplay, with everything from fiddle and banjo to ukulele making appearances. Lyrically their songs run the gamut from sentimental ballads to upbeat party anthems and love songs.
Zac Brown Band has taken home 3 Grammy Awards including Best New Artist in 2010. They have also won numerous Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, and CMT Music Awards over their career. In total, the group has achieved 13 #1 singles on the Billboard Country Airplay chart to date. With their dynamic live performances and multi-platinum album sales, Zac Brown Band has become one of the most successful country crossover acts of the 21st century.
So in summary, Zac Brown Band’s journey from grassroots Southern favorites to chart-topping country superstars is a testament to their incredible musicianship, work ethic, and unique sound. Their future surely looks bright as they continue growing and evolving as artists in the years ahead.
